CNN —England captain Harry Kane has settled into life in the Bundesliga with aplomb and, on Saturday, the forward scored a sensational goal from inside his own half during Bayern Munich’s dismantling of Darmstadt 98, echoing the exploits of former England captain David Beckham nearly 30 years ago. “I just saw the keeper out the corner of my eye in a strange position,” he told Sky Sports afterwards. Bayern Munich won 8-0. Tom Weller/dpa/APThe goal also contributed to Kane’s hat trick on Saturday as Bayern Munich defeated Darmstadt 98 8-0 following an extraordinary game which contained three red cards in the first half – one for Bayern and two for Darmstadt – and eight goals in the second half. Since joining the German club after a 19-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has scored 14 goals in 13 games and is currently the second-most prolific goalscorer in the Bundesliga after Serhou Guirassy.

MUNICH (AP) — Harry Kane has done a David Beckham. However, Bayern striker Harry Kane scored in the 73rd minute and Jamal Musiala added another six minutes later to snap their opponents' 23-match unbeaten run across all competitions. "It's my first time in this stadium and I'm just about getting my hearing back now," goalscorer Kane said. "In the second half we were a bit more calm, better on the ball and took our chances. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, however, had to come to the rescue only a minute later, spectacularly palming a Kerem Akturkoglu shot wide. In an equally pacy start to the second half, the Turks had the lion's share of chances once more with Bayern defending desperately.

CNN —England came back to beat Italy on Tuesday to book its spot at Euro 2024 and leave the reigning champion’s hopes of qualifying hanging by a thread. The result enacted a modicum of revenge for England, which lost to Italy in the same stadium in the Euro 2020 final two years ago. However, the defeat leaves Italy’s hopes of qualifying in the balance with the Azzurri on 10 points after six games, three points behind Ukraine which has 13 points after seven games. For a four-time world champion and the reigning European champion, not making it to Germany would signal another major failure. Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti said he thought his side didn’t deserve Tuesday’s result with the way it played.

Henderson was named skipper with Harry Kane rested and the 33-year-old, who has joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, played for 62 minutes before being taken off at Wembley. Henderson moved to the Saudi Pro League from Liverpool on a three-year deal in July. The switch to Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is illegal, made headlines as Henderson has long been a vocal supporter of the LGBT community. Henderson acknowledged the reactions to his move to Al-Ettifaq, saying: "I look at it from a different point of view, obviously. It was a good tournament, I think the fans enjoyed the tournament and I think Saudi would be no different.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — First Tom Brady, and now Wayne Rooney. Rooney, a Manchester United great who previously held the record for most goals for England's national team, was appointed manager of the second-division team on Wednesday — only weeks after Brady came onboard as a minority owner. The club parted ways with former manager John Eustace on Monday, leading to some criticism on social media. Rooney was manager of English club Derby from 2020-22. In a stellar playing career, Rooney won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, along with a host of other trophies.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — There was relief, at last, for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United after a late 2-1 comeback win against Brentford on Saturday. “It has to be a turning point, but also a restart because we have to get into higher levels," the United manager said. “The spirit is good, the belief is good and the team is together. Mueller magic gives Bayern Munich 2-1 win over Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Thomas Mueller came off the bench to set up the winning goal for fellow substitute Mathys Tel as Bayern Munich came from a goal down to beat Denmark's FC Copenhagen 2-1 in their Champions League Group A clash at the Parken Stadium on Tuesday. Bayern did not manage a shot on target until late in the first half as Copenhagen's compact defence neutralised the threat offered by the pace of Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane on the Munich flanks. Making his 144th appearance in the Champions League, Mueller wasted no time getting involved as he crossed for Leon Goretzka, but the midfielder's header drifted wide of the target. The victory left Bayern top of the group on six points, two ahead of Galatasaray, who beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford to leave United bottom. Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich paid tribute to both their squad strength and their goalkeeper as they stretched their unbeaten run away from home in the Champions League group stage to 18 games.

MUENSTER, Germany, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich cruised past third-tier club Preussen Muenster 4-0 despite having several players missing, including striker Harry Kane, in their delayed German Cup first round match on Tuesday. Kane had scored a hat-trick in their 7-0 demolition of VfL Bochum on Saturday but was rested and left on the bench. Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel, who was also missing three of his central defenders through injury, opted for 18-year-old Mathys Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front. Bayern fans threw hundreds of tennis balls onto the pitch, in protest against the decision to hold the German Super Cup last month on the day of the Cup first round, forcing Bayern to delay their first-round match. France youth international Tel added a fourth from a tight angle in the 85th to continue his good form, having also scored three goals in the league so far this season.

Chelsea's woes continued as they lost at home to Aston Villa and Sheffield United slumped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a humiliating 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle United in which eight different Newcastle players scored. The first north London Premier League derby since 2014 not to feature Harry Kane produced an enthralling contest at The Emirates where the two unbeaten sides went toe-to-toe. Arsenal twice led, first through Cristian Romero's 26th-minute own goal, and again thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty early in the second half. Mitoma then wrapped up the points as Brighton moved above Tottenham and Arsenal with 15 points. Newcastle ran riot at Sheffield United in the weekend's final action as they put eight past the hapless Blades -- their biggest win in the Premier League since they put eight past Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

Kane's three goals put him above club great Gerd Mueller, Miroslav Klose and Mario Mandzukic who all scored five times in their first five games. The Bavarians, who beat Manchester United 4-3 in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, move up to 13 points in top spot from five Bundesliga games. Earlier, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had tapped in for a fourth-minute lead from a perfectly-timed Kingsley Coman assist. Kane made sure of a club record when he scored with a 54th-minute penalty before Coman hit the woodwork on the hour. Solskjaer has sympathy for under-pressure Ten Hag
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he sympathises with current incumbent Erik ten Hag who is under pressure after a poor start to the season. It's a dream job, but it's difficult," Solskjaer said in an interview with The Athletic. "It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong," Solskjaer said. Solskjaer never won a trophy as a coach at United, the closest being the 2021 Europa League final when they lost to Villarreal on penalties. His reign ended after a 4-1 drubbing at Watford nearly two years ago -- a performance Solskjaer said he knew would result in him losing his job.

WROCLAW, Poland, Sept 9 (Reuters) - England fought back to claim a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Saturday and stay six points clear atop Group C after Kyle Walker netted from a sublime pass by Harry Kane for his first international goal. BERLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich's dreadful recent record against Borussia Moenchengladbach won't be on their minds when the sides meet on Saturday, with the champions clear favourites to win, said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel. Since the 2011/12 season no other team has won more matches against Bayern in the league, with Gladbach boasting 10 victories, with nine defeats and five draws. "Because we do not believe in streaks if they go against us," Tuchel said jokingly on Friday when asked why Bayern would snap their opponents' run. "But we are still the favourites going into the game and are going there to win," he told a press conference. "Against Gladbach we have to pick up where we left off against Werder Bremen and the second half against Augsburg," Tuchel said.
